Debate of the Week: is Ethereum a Security
⁉️ Following the Ethereum (ETH) merge, SEC chair Gary Gensler said proof-of-stake cryptocurrencies could be subject to securities laws, thus igniting a debate as to whether or not ETH is a security at all.
Venture investor and DAOist, Adam Cochran, argues no, saying it fails the Howey test, and has gone to great lengths to explain why. Look no further than the comments section of Adam’s tweet thread to see a number of contrary opinions. What say you?
🌎 Cryptocurrency and Climate Change. In response to US President Biden’s executive order on cryptocurrency, which directed various government entities to review the cryptocurrency industry, the OSTP submitted its report on the industry’s climate and energy implications, which suggests a Bitcoin ban.
Blockchain enthusiasts would like to remind anyone listening that mining represents a fraction of the world's total carbon emissions and that ETH's recent transition to PoS has already cut the energy use associated with mining. Our takeaway is two-fold: the nascent cryptocurrency industry has shown a greater commitment to energy efficiency than most legacy industries, and, focusing on a tiny subset of the population participating in crypto instead of addressing problems with material scale is akin to banning plastic straws. Let’s be actual problem solvers.
