🎙 In the latest episode of DAO or Never we discuss Public Nouns and what makes Nouns NFTs so meaningful; the launch of the SAFE token and delegating governance power; and how the Reality.eth attack happened. Available on Apple and Spotify
Highlights
🤖 LeXpunK Joins CFTC Challenge. A court ruled that the CTFC legally served Ooki DAO regarding their filing of a federal civil enforcement action when it utilized a website help bot and forum post. A group of cryptocurrency advocates have challenged the case and Ooki DAO members are preparing a response. Big picture: watch this one. It’s early days, and it matters how DAOs are recognized.
🚀 Building Web3. Steel DAO, born from BessemerDAO with a mission to support web3 founders and operators and democratize access to private markets, launched with a scout program, talent collective, and job board. Steel DAO brings together a community of investors, founders, skills, and ecosystem participants, and will provide web3 builders with funds, expertise, and guidance on their paths to accelerating the mainstream adoption of web3.
🏆 And The Winners Are! Gitcoin, where web3 projects are born, validated, and funded, released the results of Grants Round 15. First place winners in the Cause Rounds are ReFi DAO (Climate Solutions), Coin Center (Advocacy - Crypto Regulation), Blu3 DAO (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), and New Atlantis (Decentralized Science). Congratulations!
🌈 Speaking of DAOs Saving the World. We’re intrigued by the innovative way KlimaDAO’s carbon credit-backed token merges web3 with the climate. While most DAOs back their tokens with financial assets, KlimaDAO’s token is supported by carbon tax credits that companies purchase to offset their carbon footprint. Additionally, KlimaDAO’s USDC inverse bond is making headlines, with the DAO becoming a key player in the DeFi ecosystem.
🔬 We ♥️ DeSci. OpSci DAO earned a Gitcoin grant and honorable 6th place finish in the Decentralized Science (DeSci) round of GR15. Comprised of scientific activists, researchers, organizers, and advocates, the group is addressing issues that have historically hampered the production of scientific knowledge, including the norms surrounding data sharing, reproducibility, incentive alignment, coordination, and intellectual property.
👓 NFTs making an impact. In the week since Public Nouns launched, its model has proven its appeal and its treasury has grown to over 68 ETH, or approximately $93,000, at the time of publication. Every Public Nouns NFT includes one vote on how to spend the DAO’s funds to support and spread awareness about public goods.
🗳️ Political Science vs Corporations. Despite a desire for the contrary, DAOs are often governed like corporations, with individuals holding governance rights in a shareholder model. What if DAOs operated more like states, with governance rights provided to multiple groups? Two DAOs - JokeDAO and the Optimism Collective - are already experimenting with bicameral governance to solve the coin voting problem.
👀 Web3 Projects to Watch. Thanks to Stargazoor for ensuring we’re up-to-date on top-rated, developer-approved, open source projects. Some of the latest on our radar: Seadrop, a contract for conducting primary NFT drops on Ethereum Virtual Machines (EVM) compatible blockchains; MEV Template, to bootstrap your Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) bot strategies with a simple foundational layer to build on; and VRGDA Simulator, to simulate Variable Rate Gradual Dutch Auctions (VRGDA) in your browser, perfect for prototyping and use with tabletop games. If this is beyond your grade level, see below.

A Tool (and a Philosophy) for DAOists
🌊 A New Avenue for DAOs. Despite intentions, hierarchies often struggle to handle complex problems, as solving them requires collaboration, experimentation, flexibility, and adaptability, concepts that can be inherently challenging. To solve complex issues, organizations should consider a structure based on heterarchies. A heterarchical structure resembles an undulating ocean; decision-making emerges organically like waves, and solutions are sourced from conversations between trusting community members, not instructions handed from manager to employee. In this context, a DAO management tool like Avenue might be preferred over the one that starts with a D and encourages hierarchies.
