🧪 The top headline in DAOs is the testnet trial taking place in preparation for this year’s Ethereum merge. The eventual transition will yield improved scalability, lower fees, and massive gains in energy efficiency, benefitting those both inside and outside of the DAO ecosystem.
🎙 In the latest episode of the DAO or Never podcast Logos co-founders Geoffrey Arone and Isaac Patka discuss why Isaac hacked a DAO, how web3 enables Pooling Together for change, the funding environment, and more. Available on Apple and Spotify.
💸 Speaking of funding, opportunity knocks. Gitcoin’s 14th Grants Round is offering $3M+ in funds to community-endorsed, open source projects. See the full thread to learn how to support a project or apply for a grant.
⛓ On the topic of security, Kelvin Fichter’s thread explaining the recent multisig account takeovers on Optimism is worth reviewing, especially by those operating services on multiple blockchains. Don’t assume you have control over a smart contract address on one chain just because you have it on another!
💵 While mobile-investment platform Delphia’s $60M raise is the headline, we’re excited by the DAOification of their business model, which rewards users for sharing data. Data autonomy and benefiting from the third-party use of one’s own data - rather than the money going to you-know-who - is emblematic of the web3 ethos.
Become a Legal Eagle
A lot is being written about DAOs and law, and for good reason. Security in web3 is as complex as it is important. This week’s contributions to the DAO legal discourse include the following:
⚖️ The DAO Legal Entity Matrix, compiled by Paradigm, compares various legal entities available for DAOs and invites those working on these problems to contribute their observations and solutions. Bookmark this one and share your wisdom, as this space and document are expected to rapidly evolve.
⚖️ In Decentralized Governance and the Lessons of Corporate Governance, published in the Harvard Law School Forum, the authors describe “a new breed of business organization….defined by its rejection of the centralized, traditional governance structures at the heart of our modern corporations” which sounds about right. They then list a number of challenges DAOs face and guidance on how to overcome them. It may sting, but a little constructive feedback isn’t a bad thing.
⚖️ Miles Jennings and David Kerr of a16z crypto identify challenges and propose solutions in their exploration of the legal uncertainty around DAOs. See A Legal Framework for DAOs Part I, DAO Entity Features & Entity Selection, and A Legal Framework for DAOs Part II to better understand and approach legal issues pertaining to DAOs.
